Most enterprises leverage flexibility and scalability of the Cloud as it lends to quick deployment with multiple VMs, databases, Kubernetes, and other services. Theoretically, the public cloud is a great solution for enterprises as it allows for virtually unlimited scalability on an incremental basis, with minimal deployment and management requirements. But it is usually not secure enough for organizations that deal with sensitive data, as data governance and localization compliance requires greater control. Then there are enterprises that demand low-latency performance for massive data projects, for which public cloud is just not enough.
To address these issues of compliance and latency, enterprises have embraced the hybrid cloud, which combines on-premises and public cloud resources. This ‘best-of-both-worlds’ approach empowers you to run low-latency apps in your own data center or on local servers (or even in a colocation center), as the on premise IT infrastructure connects seamlessly to the cloud. It also allows you to scale efficiently and easily while leveraging the flexible cost structure to the cloud. Yet, you also use local resources for those projects that have the highest compute demands.
If your organization has low-latency computing needs, where you can combine hybrid solutions with uncompromised performance, AWS Outposts is the right solution for you. Whether you require solutions for a credit card processing enterprise application for thousands of customers, or a university research project trying to find new chemical compositions, you can customize for your exact requirements.
Defining AWS Outpost
AWS Outposts is a fully managed service that extends AWS infrastructure, AWS services, APIs, and tools to virtually any datacenter, co-location space, or on-premises facility for a truly consistent hybrid experience. AWS Outposts is ideal for workloads that require low latency access to on-premises systems, local data processing, or local data storage.
20% of AWS large-enterprise customers will have AWS Outposts running in their private data center environments by 2022
AWS Outposts offers you the same AWS hardware infrastructure, services, APIs, and tools to build and run your applications on premises and in the cloud for a truly consistent hybrid experience. AWS compute, storage, database, and other services run locally on Outposts, and you can access the full range of AWS services available in the Region to build, manage, and scale your on-premises applications using familiar AWS services and tools.
Simply put: “AWS Outposts is a hardware rack in an enclosure -- a physical product that you deploy at your own site. Yet, it is supported fully by Amazon in that the company installs, operates, and supports the hardware rack with its own team of engineers.”
But neither is the AWS Outposts a standalone infrastructure, as it is designed to provide on-premise operation of AWS services. Technically, AWS treats each Outposts deployment as an extension of the AWS public cloud in the data center, and of the AWS region.
Though the customer’s data centers host the Outposts racks, Amazon monitors and upgrades the infrastructure from their end. Moreover, since the architecture is modular, hardware can be immediately replaced on failure without any downtime for you.
Announcement by CEO- Andy Jassy on Outposts-
AWS CEO Andy Jassy, speaking at a press conference earlier today, said there are certain workloads like running a factory that need to compute resources to be close because of low-latency requirements. That’s where Outposts could play well, and where similar existing solutions in his opinion fell short because there wasn’t a smooth connection between the on-prem hardware and the cloud.
“We tried to rethink this with a different approach,” he said. “We thought about it more as trying to distribute AWS on premises. With Outposts, you have racks of AWS servers that have compute, storage, database and analytics and machine learning on them. You get to decide what composition you want and we deliver that to you,” he said.
The hardware is equipped with a slew of services, including Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS), Amazon Virtual Private Cloud, Amazon ECS, Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service and Amazon EMR.
Hybrid cloud is the direction at which AWS Outposts is aimed at, time will only tell how the market interprets this but this sure a win strategy by AWS. Let see top 3 priorities of the CEOs now-
- Revenue acceleration- 88% of the CEOs believe this is their utmost priority now.
- Improve agility and faster time to market- 71% of CEOs would like to focus on this.
- Cost Reduction- 47% CEOs need to work on this day-in and out.
Why Hybrid Cloud
As the world grows more interconnected with smart devices, social platforms, and digital-native services, there is an urgent need for large scale computing platforms and infrastructure. Emerging trends in edge computing, IoT, and 5G network technologies are playing a key role in cementing the need for robust IaaS/ PaaS solutions facilitating the delivery of digital-heavy services to clients on time. But we need cohesive cloud strategies to achieve this goal successfully.
Reliable infrastructure of data centers, networks, and applications is the backbone that will further the growth of IT modernization for enterprises. It allows stakeholders to maintain an equitable balance between crucial factors such as data performance, workload migrations, compute, and storage capabilities, and business and IT needs.
The very structure of hybrid cloud serves up a common set of standards, tools, and application programming interfaces (APIs) which make DevOps and modernization far more streamlined and simplified. Hybrid cloud architecture is able to solve issues around latency and scalability by making bandwidth available to developers. By extending the data center to any co-location space from the premises, hybrid cloud services ensure business continuity and quick disaster recovery. The major advantages for enterprises that choose AWS Outposts solutions are:
- Assured Compliance without compromising performance
- Low latency
- Consistent user experience
- Stronger DR solutions by extending AWS region into a different Seismic zone
- AWS Migration easier than ever
Powering the Hybrid Cloud Vision
Amazon Web Services (AWS) through AWS Outposts has been playing a key role in bringing the power of the hybrid cloud to enterprises worldwide. It allows users to leverage the entire range of Amazon’s cloud services suite — from APIs, infrastructure, and management tools, to support — across public or private cloud environments. This solves a major conundrum for AWS customers who continue to operate with on-premises workloads, especially for applications that are latency-sensitive or serve remote locations. In these situations, maintaining proximity to edge resources is of utmost importance.
AWS Outposts provides the hardware to enable AWS services, infrastructure, and operating models to run on an on-premises structure. It provides a common interface — APIs, tools, hardware, and functionalities — through which users can seamlessly and securely integrate their on-premises workloads with other applications in AWS cloud for a consistent hybrid experience.
Manufacturers, for instance, can run process control systems like SCADA on the shop floor while being seamlessly integrated with off-premises data centers. Healthcare institutions can run analytics on patient data quickly by storing the necessary information locally. Retail companies running large scale operations that involve e-commerce operations, in-person transactions, connected store experiences can leverage AWS’ database, container, and analytics services to run operations smoothly.
Over the years Cloud4C Services (A CtrlS Company) has built its expertise across a wide range of industries, including healthcare, telecommunications, oil and gas, and others curating customized enterprise cloud strategies and solutions.
