Cloud bills accumulate by the second; with compute, storage, data transfer, managed services, reserved commitments, across AWS, Azure, GCP, and sometimes all three at once. Someone must watch all of it, make sense of it, and turn it into decisions.

That person is me, a FinOps specialist. And here’s how my usual workday looks like.

7:30 AM: It's Early, But the Dashboards Don't Wait

The workday starts before most meetings are scheduled. Before anything else, the dashboards get checked.

Overnight, monitoring tools have been running across cloud accounts. By 7:30 AM, some days alerts are already registered. Then it could be anything; a cost anomaly flagged in one of the AWS accounts, an Azure resource deployed without the required tags, or a GCP commitment utilization rate that dropped below target.

So, the first task becomes triaging. Not every alert is a problem worth escalating. Some, like a release went out the previous evening, autoscaling responded to traffic, or a scheduled batch job ran larger than usual, are expected. Others are avoidable: instances left running in dev and test environments over the weekend, or a misconfigured policy that provisioned far more capacity than the workload needed.

The FinOps Foundation notes that cloud billing data can lag behind actual usage by as much as 36 hours1. But that delay matters. By the time an anomaly surfaces in a billing dashboard, costs may have been accumulating for a full day and a half. The response must start on the usage signal and that requires having the right monitoring in place, with the discipline to act before the numbers are complete. 

8:00 AM: Moving to Classifying What's Real and What's Noise

With the alerts pulled, the next 45 minutes are spent on classification work.

Each anomaly gets assigned to one of four buckets:

  • Legitimate business activity (document and close)
  • Avoidable waste (act today)
  • Governance gap (flag for process review), or
  • Of unknown origin (investigate before anything else).

The unknown-origin category can be the most time-consuming. Without clean tagging data on the affected resources, finding the responsible team requires working backward through account structures, deployment logs, and sometimes Slack history.

This is one of the most practical arguments for rigorous tagging standards. A resource tagged with team, environment, project, and cost center can be traced to its owner in under two minutes. One without tags might take an hour to attribute; an hour during which costs still keep running.

The FinOps Foundation's anomaly management framework2 recommends treating cost severity on a scale from low to critical, with the explicit acknowledgment that low-severity alerts can escalate quickly as costs accumulate. The approach here is to start investigation before the full billing data is available, not after, and reapply detection logic as the data refreshes.

By 8:45 AM, the morning priority list is set.

9:30 AM: Time for Engineering Sync

The 9:30 slot is the weekly engineering sync. This is a recurring cross-team session where current cloud costs get reviewed alongside infrastructure decisions in flight.

Let’s say, a FinOps professional's ability to be useful in this room depends on speaking both technical and financial language fluently. For instance, when the discussion turns to rightsizing a fleet of m5.2xlarge instances based on actual CPU and memory utilization data, a FinOps expert has to be able to explain the performance risk tradeoffs to the engineers; not just say "make them smaller." And when that same recommendation goes to finance as a line item in the optimization report, it needs to land as a monthly savings number.

10:30 AM is Finance Review: Translating for the Other Side

The next meeting is with finance. Different audience, same underlying data, completely different conversation.

This is where engineers want to know what's causing the costs, finance wants to know what it means for the budget. The job in this room is to translate cloud usage into financial context: month-to-date spend versus budget, forecast for the remainder of the quarter, variance from plan, and the top cost drivers broken down by team and environment.

Chargeback reporting comes up. The organization is mid-implementation on a model where business units are directly allocated the cost of their cloud usage. The finance team needs confirmation that tagging coverage is high enough across all accounts to produce reliable allocation numbers. The conversation about forecasting takes up most of the remaining time. Finance needs a 90-day cloud spend projection with enough accuracy to hold up in a board-level budget review.

The output of this meeting: a draft forecast, a note to push on engineering for a firm expansion timeline, and a separate deep-dive session booked with the ML team to get a better handle on their compute trajectory.

11:30 AM: Reserved Instance and Savings Plan Work

Before lunch, there's a standing block for commitment management; one of the more technical and consequential parts of this role as a FinOps specialist.

Reserved Instances (RIs) and Savings Plans are commitment-based pricing models offered by cloud providers. In exchange for committing to a baseline level of usage over one or three years, organizations receive discounted rates compared to on-demand pricing. Getting this wrong in either direction is expensive. Because if you over-commit, you're paying for the capacity you won't use. Under-commit and you're leaving discounts on the table for usage that's actually predictable.

Two KPIs drive this work. The first is RI utilization rate: how much of the reserved capacity purchased is actually being consumed. Low utilization signals over-commitment. The second is coverage rate: what percentage of eligible compute usage is being covered by reserved pricing rather than on-demand rates. Both numbers need to be tracked and adjusted continuously, not just at the renewal time.

12:00 PM: Now What Happens When There's a Crisis

Not every day has one. But some do, and the response process is where a FinOps expert’s maturity shows most clearly.

Let’s consider around noon time a cost spike alert fires on one of the production accounts. The anomaly detection tool flags a sharp deviation from the 30-day baseline; a service in the data processing layer is generating costs at roughly 4× its expected hourly rate.

These would be the sequence of response in such a case:

  • Scope the anomaly: Which account, which service, which region? Is the spend still climbing or has it stabilized?
  • Identify the owner: If the job's resource is properly tagged with the owning team and project identifiers, this takes under mere minutes. But without those tags, the search can take a significantly longer time.
  • Contain and communicate: The owning team is pinged. The job is stopped. Engineering confirms no downstream dependencies are affected. Finance leadership gets a short-written summary within 30 minutes of containment: what happened, when it was caught, what the cost impact was, and what's being done to prevent recurrence.
  • Post-incident review (booked for 4:30 PM): The question isn't who made the mistake. It;s mostly - what guardrail was missing?

The FinOps Foundation's anomaly management guidance makes a specific point worth internalizing; low-severity anomalies can escalate to critical if left unaddressed quickly, because cloud costs compound across hours. Early response, even on partial data, consistently produces better outcomes than waiting for complete billing information.

1:30 PM: Time for Waste Identification: The Steady Work

After the incident is contained and the post-event analysis is scheduled, the afternoon moves into the more routine (but no less important) work of waste identification.

Unused Elastic IP addresses, unattached managed disks, orphaned snapshots from decommissioned instances, databases running in environments that haven't had active users in six weeks, autoscaling groups with minimum instance counts set above what the workload actually requires at off-peak hours.

None of these individually represent a catastrophic cost. But across a multi-cloud environment with dozens of teams provisioning and decommissioning resources throughout the year, they accumulate into big numbers.

One particularly effective fix for development and test environments is automated scheduling: resources are powered down outside business hours and on weekends. For a large organization with substantial dev infrastructure, this saving alone justifies the FinOps function's existence.

2:30 PM: Forecasting - Building the 90-Day View

The afternoon block is reserved for forecasting, as it requires focused time. This is not dashboard work; it's modeling work.

Cloud cost forecasting is structurally different from traditional IT budget planning. In a fixed-infrastructure model, the next period's costs are mostly derivable from existing contracts and headcount assumptions. In a cloud model, costs are a function of usage, which is a function of business activity, architectural decisions, team behavior, and sometimes events no one anticipated.

A credible 90-day forecast needs inputs from multiple sources: trailing usage data (the most reliable signal), confirmed planned infrastructure changes, the regional expansion timeline that's still pending from engineering, and the ML team's growth projection that needs its own separate analysis.

The State of FinOps 2025 report from the FinOps Foundation found that governance and policy at scale has become the top priority for FinOps practitioners, overtaking workload optimization3. That shift is relevant here. Organizations that have been doing FinOps for two or more years have largely handled the obvious optimization wins. The harder, more durable work is building institutional structures. This includes automated policy enforcement, reliable budget guardrails, and cross-team accountability frameworks. These keep costs under control as the organization scales and the team doing the work changes.

3:30 PM: Stakeholder Reporting

The late afternoon is reporting time. A cost report going to department heads and engineering leadership needs to be ready by the end of the day.

A well-constructed cost report does not just list what was spent. It breaks spend down by environment (production vs. development vs. staging), by service category (compute, storage, networking, managed services, data transfer), by team, and by cloud provider.

It flags variances from budget with enough context to be actionable — not just:

"compute spend was up 18%" but more like...

"compute spend was up 18%, driven by the ML training cluster expansion and the dev environment instances that ran through the weekend."

It surfaces the savings achieved in the period: rightsizing actions taken, idle resources removed, even commitment coverage improvements. And it identifies the top cost drivers clearly, so stakeholders know where to focus their attention if they want to dig deeper.

What it does not do is bury the audience in raw numbers. The goal is to give decision-makers exactly what they need to make one or two informed decisions, not to demonstrate that all the data was collected.

4:30 PM: Post-Incident Review

The post-incident review runs for some time with the engineering team, a finance representative, and the FinOps lead.

The structure is straightforward. What happened? When did it start? When was it caught? What was the financial impact? What is the detection gap? What is the corrective action, and who owns it & by when?

The FinOps Foundation's guidance on this is explicit: the review should focus on the system, not the individual. The engineer who deployed the event didn't do so maliciously. The organization's governance tooling didn't prevent it, and the monitoring thresholds weren't configured to catch it before costs climbed. These are solvable process problems, and corrective actions can be taken.

5:30 PM: End-of-Day Logging is a Must

The last 30 minutes are administrative, but very important.

Today's work gets documented: the weekend dev instance issue (action taken, estimated savings), the rightsizing analysis (recommendation sent to engineering lead, two-week stability check agreed), the RI conversion modeling (in progress, due Friday), the incident (contained, post-mortem complete, corrective actions assigned), the waste sweep (identified, remediation steps initiated), and the 90-day forecast (draft complete, pending ML team input).

The day ends without fanfare most days. No major announcement; no product shipped. What got done was harder to see, but the cost trajectory is slightly lower than it would have been. A process now has one fewer gap, and a team understands its cloud spends a little better than it did this morning.
