What is Security as a Service (SECaaS)?
When an organization uses security tools, protection services and monitoring services from a third-party provider, such a model is called Security as a Service, or SECaaS. This is a cloud-based cybersecurity service, where, thanks to a subscription-based model in play, customers can access security services as needed on-the-go, instead of building, implementing, and managing every security capability in-house.
SECaaS can include a multitude of services such as managed firewall, threat detection, vulnerability management, endpoint protection, identity security, email security, web security, SIEM, SOC monitoring, data loss prevention, and compliance support. As is the goal with every security service, these services come together to protect users, applications, cloud environments, networks, and business data.
The main benefit of the Security as a Service model is that organizations need not worry about investing a heavy amount, upfront, in tools, infrastructure, and specialized teams. They can access advanced security capabilities without it. As a result, they also get to leverage the benefits of scalability, faster deployment, continuous monitoring, and improved responses to cyber threats.
Businesses that operate across cloud, hybrid cloud, remote work, SaaS applications, and distributed IT environments will find that the SECaaS model works especially well for them. Thanks to the model, security teams get to manage risks more efficiently while keeping protection updated against evolving threats.
However, the provider they choose must have strong monitoring capabilities, compliance expertise, threat intelligence, clear SLAs, and the ability to integrate with their existing/in-house IT systems. Otherwise, this model may not really bring that much value to them.
